Zambia's structuraladiustment programme haschanged the face of its labourforce. While over 72,000adults have been renderedjobless over the last 4 yearssince the reforms began, children have taken up manyjobs in the labour force, according to a survey of theCentral Statistics Office.
The survey attributes thisdisturbing trend to increasing job losses as companiescrumble under Zambia'sdemanding new economicenvironment. The government has compounded thecrisis by cut-backs in its public sector wage bill.
