More midwives needed: An additional 350,000 midwives are needed to ensure 95 per cent of the 160 million births the world over in a year are attended by trained health workers. As per the International Confederation of Midwives and WHO, maternal mortality is the "highest health inequity in the world with more than 99 per cent deaths occurring in the developing world". There are 250,000 licensed midwives worldwide.
coral triangle at risk: Rising sea temperature is threatening southeast Asia's coral triangle, which supports the economy of 100 million people in the region, said a report by World Wildlife Fund. The system has 76 per cent of the world's coral species and 35 per cent of reef fish--the highest density of species on the planet. Its collapse would decrease food production by 80 per cent, it warned at the World Ocean Conference in Sulawesi, Indonesia.The coral triangle stretches across the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia and extends up to the Solomon Islands.
