The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has generated its first alert for the formation of Cyclone Jawad. The cyclone is likely to reach the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts on the morning of December 4, 2021 according to IMD.

The weather agency said in its cyclone update that a low pressure area lay over south Thailand on the morning of November 30. The system is likely to emerge into the Andaman Sea by the evening of the same day. It will then move in the west-northwestward direction and intensify into a depression over south east Bay of Bengal by December 2.

On its way, it may cause significant rainfall over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 30-December 2. The islands may experience wind speeds of 40-50 kilometres per hour to begin with, which may increase to 50-60 km / hr with, gusts of 70 km / hr on the third day.

The system is predicted to intensify further into a cyclone December 3. IMD expects the cyclone to have peak wind speeds of 90-100 km/hr in the Bay of Bengal, with gusts of 110 km / hr.

“Sea surface temperature and vertical wind shear are supportive of its growth,” private weather company Skymet Weather said. But it also cautioned that “tropical storms have the track record of defying the timelines and track.”

Therefore, the correct track can only be predicted after the formation of a deep depression, the weather company said, the next stage of which, would be a cyclone.

Heavy rainfall may from the evening of December 3 onwards over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha. IMD has predicted wind speeds of 70-80 km / hr December 3, with gusts of 90 km / hr along the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

IMD predicted that cyclone Jawad would reach the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts by the morning of December 4.

The system may curve north eastwards after a probable landfall along the Andhra and Odisha coasts and reach West Bengal, inducing rainfall throughout its path, according to the IMD.

People in north Odisha and West Bengal can expect heavy rainfall from December 4 onwards. The rains would move into Northeast India from December 5. The region which has been going through a lean period in terms of rainfall lately.
