Bangladesh tackles risk of submergence: Bangladesh plans to build three dams to save itself from getting submerged.
The Ganga and the Brahmaputra join in Bangladesh before flowing into the Bay of the Bengal. Studies show they carry more than one billion tonnes of sediment annually. The dams will save 500 square km of land. A UN panel predicted that 17 per cent of the country’s land would go under sea by 2050. Bangladesh has a population of 150 million and it is increasing at the rate of 2.1 per cent a year.
