Police to check power wastage in China
Beijing will soon have an 'energy police' to crack down on power wastage by commercial establishments and offices.
The unique force will patrol shopping malls and impose fines on stores with temperatures set too high during winters or office complexes with their lights on during the day. The first-ever 20 energy efficiency supervisors will be employed over the next few months and new regulations will be drawn up to demarcate their area of operation.
The step is part of a national drive to improve energy efficiency to curb pollution and dependency on imported oil as China's economy grows.
Beijing has asked large buildings and government offices not to keep air conditioning temperatures below 26C and allowed officials to wear casual dresses in which they wouldn't feel hot.
According to the Asian Development Bank, China consumes over four times more energy to generate a unit of gross domestic product than the average G-8 developed countries.
