AN INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY . K P Srivastava . Published by Kalyani Publishers . New Delhi . 2001 . Rs 195
As apparent from its title, this book introduces one to the various aspects of environmental pollution. The good thing about its text is that it is comprehensive even to those who are not initiated to science. Topics range from environment and the biogeochemical cycles, energy flow to food chains in the ecosystems and population ecology. The third part of the book deals with the country's natural resources (NR) which "are the actual source of the nation's wealth-generation and target of pollution".
Even though pollution cannot be eradicated totally, it can be abated with a proper approach. The book tries to inculcate this thought in the readers and does so by presenting the deplorable state of the environment. It covers the crucial issues of pesticide poisoning and biodiversity loss that are of immediate concern for us. The book avoids verbosity but is informative and well-illustrated. There is also a glossary of environmental terms at the end of the book. A must-read for those who want to understand commonly-used environmental dictions without going into the intricacies.
