The Chief Judicial Magistrate (cjm) of Bhopal has issued an arrest warrant against the former chairperson of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson, in connection with the 1984 gas tragedy. A gas leak from company's pesticide plant in Bhopal had killed 10,000 people instantly. The judge ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (cbi) to produce Anderson without delay.

The CJM also pulled up cbi for failing to enforce the arrest warrant first issued in 1992 and the extradition order issued in 2002, and demanded an explanation. "The cbi asked for Anderson's extradition in 2003, 11 years after the first arrest warrant was issued," said Rachna Dhingra of Bhopal Group for Information and Action. The US government rejected the extradition request citing technical error. cbi claimed it sent the request again in 2007, but the US said it did not receive it.
