environment should be protected at all cost, even if doing so causes people some inconvenience or discomfort. This was the opinion of 77 per cent people surveyed during an opinion poll by Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun .
The poll, which was in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire, was conducted between December 16-17, 2000. Of the 3,000 people surveyed, 77 per cent respondents said that they were willing to give up some of their conveniences they now take for granted to help protect the environment. When questioned about Japan's future, 61 per cent said they wanted Japan to be "a country that values nature and the environment."
