Japanese food traders are leaving no stone unturned in trying to convince foreign consumers that Japanese delicacies remain safe to eat, after last year’s nuclear disaster at Fukushima. Rice from the prefecture was among the products featured at a three-day food fair in Singapore, titled “Oishii Japan 2012”, in early November. “I want visitors to know that our products are safe,” said Yutaka Suzuki, a Fukushima prefectural official in charge of farm products distribution.
The venue even had a Japanese-style restaurant counter where visitors could enjoy sushi and sake. The organisers said 4,000 industry workers from 19 Asian and European countries visited the fair. Japan’s food industry has been hit hard by import restrictions from Southeast Asian and European countries after the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
