The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has announced that it will present the International Programme for the Development of Communication prize to two South American community radio stations. The recipients are the Radio Huanacache network set up by the Maestro Pablo Pizzuno School in Argentina and the Peruvian radio station Quispillaccta.
The $20,000 prize is awarded every two years for innovative communication efforts, especially in developing countries, that promote local cultural and social traditions. The Huanacache radio network unites a dozen schools and communities in the northeastern Lavalle desert of Argentina's Mendoza province. Broadcasts popularise the customs and art of the local Huarpe culture and also deal with education, health, agriculture and law.
Radio Quispillaccta broadcasts in the Quechua language from the town of Ayacucho in Peru. The station strives to revive Andean farming and cultural traditions and helps listeners participate in community organisation.
