I visited Hemkund in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, in 1966 when there was just a small Sikh shrine with a modest nishan-sahib, and a frame of a slightly larger gurdwara being built at the time (see below a picture I took then). Contrast that with a picture of Hemkund earlier this year to see how overcrowded the religious site has become these days.
