Look further for weather

Looking high into the atmosphere, at the stratosphere, might tell us more about weather in Europe. Unusual stratospheric conditions herald changes in winter weather in the Northern Hemisphere up to two months later, say US-based researchers. The finding won't help weather forecaster too much but it may be a valuable addition to meteorologists' toolkits. The stratospheric effect works on average, but it doesn't happen every time.
