Hot mix plants to be replaced with new technology: NGT

The Kolkata municipal corporation has sought permission to continue with the operation of hot mix plants with due consent from the state pollution control board (SPCB) as well as six months’ time to implement new technology. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on December 18, while agreeing with SPCB’s stand for time to adopt new technologies for abatement of pollution in place of the hot mix plants, ordered that four months is sufficient for the purpose.

Shift waste disposal site from Deepor Beel, NGT orders

The NGT on December 18 directed that shifting of the solid waste management plant from Deepor Beel should be given top priority. State of Assam had submitted before the tribunal that a nine-member committee has been constituted to identify a suitable location to shift the municipal solid waste plant, presently situated on the ‘Deepor Beel’, for which two months’ time has been stipulated.

NGT refuses to interfere with SPCB order on temporary closure of polluting industries for Kumb Mela

The NGT on December 19 refused to interfere with the SPCB order which had directed for temporarily closure of polluting industries discharging effluent in tributaries of Ganga, in view of ensuing Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj commencing from 14.01.2019. The tribunal had come to this conclusion after going through reports from the central pollution control board (CPCB) and Uttar Pradesh pollution control board (UPPCB), and was of the view that the activities of the industries have an adverse impact on the water quality of river Ganga.

NGT: Fix timeline to control lake pollution between Tumkur and Magadi main road

A report was submitted by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) before the NGT on December 19 listing the long-term and short-term action plans to control lake pollution between Tumkur Road (NH-4) and Magadi main road on account of municipal sewage and untreated industrial effluents. Some of the measures listed include conducting a survey of boundary of each lake and provide fencing at these lakes, especially Gangondanahalli Lake, and evicting the encroachers. Another measure includes identifying illegal discharge/ dumping of sewage into Rajakaluve directly or indirectly with the help of village panchayat officials and to initiate action (if any) against the defaulters.

Kuantum paper mill causing pollution allege residents of Pensara village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab

The NGT on December 19 directed a joint report to be furnished by CPCB and Punjab state pollution control board (PSPCB) on the allegation of pollution being caused by Kuantum paper mill, affecting inhabitants of Saila Khurd, Raniala, Saila Kalan, Jassoval, Majari, Paddi Khusi and Pensara village, district Hoshiarpur, Punjab, through the discharge of polluted air and water.
