GLOBALISATION is no longer considered profanation. Today urbanisation and globalisation have to work in tandem, bringing in information, and consequently, opportunity.
This study was triggered off by the collapse of a rubbish dump in Payatas Manilla on July 11, 2000 killing 218 and burying another 300 in the rotting garbage. The world community sat up and noticed the dangerous manifestations of urbanisation and its pressure on those living on the fringe. International help poured in, demonstrating 'the enabling role of globalisation - from below'.
Kofi Annanin his foreword writes, this report is a step forward to making the world cities "better safer place to live in an age of globalisation". Highlights of case studies on human settlement conditions and trends are also included. The involvement of local governing bodies have been cited, and the active participation of the beneficiaries in planning has been stressed. All in all, a comprehensive database for all those working in the field.
