Nuclear Free Resistance Jharkhandi's Organisation Against Radiation
The Jharkhandi's Organisation Against Radiation (joar) has been selected for the 2004 Nuclear Free Resistance Award -- an annual prize given by the Berlin-based Nuclear Free Future Organisation. joar works to defend the health and traditional living space of tribal peoples in the fifteen villages surrounding the state-operated Jadugoda uranium mine in Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. Mine labourers -- almost always dalits and tribals -- are given no safety equipment and routinely suffer skin diseases and tuberculosis.
The award ceremony will take place on November 28, 2004 in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The Nuclear Free Future awardees this year also include the City Montessori School, Lucknow, U ttar Pradesh; us journalist Jonathan Schell; the Austrian environmentalist Hildegrad Breiner and the us physician Asaf Durakovic.
