In 2024, the dire aftermath of Russia's prolonged conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold, with over 8 million women and girls requiring urgent humanitarian assistance, a statement from United Nations Women warned on February 22, 2024.

This two-year span of relentless warfare has exacted a devastating toll, claiming thousands of lives, ravaging infrastructure, displacing millions and inflicting deep trauma across generations, the statement said. Amidst this chaos, women and girls bear a disproportionate burden, facing heightened risks and challenges.

Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, the toll on women and girls has been stark: Over 3,200 fatalities and nearly 4,900 injuries, with women constituting 56 per cent of the roughly 4 million internally displaced persons. Regrettably, projections for the coming year paint a grim picture, with an estimated 56 per cent of those requiring humanitarian aid being women and girls, totaling 8 million individuals.

The obstacles confronting women in Ukraine have only intensified, encompassing access to security, justice, essential services and employment, UN Women pointed out. Gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking, has surged, compounding the hardships faced by women and girls.

Despite these challenges, women have emerged as the bedrock of Ukraine's economy, driving entrepreneurship and resilience, the statement highlighted. Women now spearhead half of the country's businesses, with over 10,000 new ventures established in 2023 alone.

Moreover, more than 62,000 women serve in the military, with thousands deployed at the frontline, demonstrating unwavering courage and commitment.

“As women continue to suffer the consequences of the war in Ukraine, they need support, security, and most of all, peace. Their resilience throughout has been enduring and remarkable,” highlighted Sabine Freizer Gunes, UN Women Representative in Ukraine.

Amidst the turmoil, women and women-led organisations are at the forefront, providing vital aid, fostering community resilience, and sustaining the economy, the statement said. Their contributions remain indispensable in navigating the challenges and forging a path towards stability and prosperity.
