Road accidents
Road accidents have been declining across India since 2015, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha on July 11.
Gadkari placed data recorded by his minitry on the floor of the house regarding the number of persons killed in road accidents country-wide during the last three calendar years — 2015 to 2017.
Analysis of the data shows that road accidents have been declining since 2015. Road accidents declined by 4.14 per cent in 2016, as compared to 2015 and in the year 2017, road accidents decreased by 3.28 per cent, as compared to 2016.
Welfare of sanitation workers
No person, local authority or any agency shall engage or employ, either directly or indirectly, any person for hazardous cleaning of sewer or a septic tank according to Section 7 of the 'Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Rehabilitation Act, 2013' (MS Act, 2013).
This was stated by Union Minister of State in the Jal Shakti Ministry, Rattan Lal Kataria in the Lok Sabha.
As the MS Act, 2013, had come into force on December 6, 2013, hazardous cleaning of a sewer or septic tank without protective gear and other cleaning devices is a prohibited activity with effect from December 6, 2014, Kataria added.
Impact of delayed monsoon
The onset of the Southwest monsoon over Kerala (June 8 2019) and its further progress across the country had been delayed by a week due to the formation and movement of the very severe cyclonic storm 'Vayu' in the Arabian Sea, said Rattan Lal Kataria in the Lok Sabha.
Drinking water facilities in rural areas
The Jal Shakti ministry administers the centrally-sponsored National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) through which it provides technical and financial assistance to the states for improving the coverage of drinking water facilities in rural areas, said Rattan Lal Kataria in the Lok Sabha.
States are empowered to plan, design, approve and operate drinking water supply schemes, he added.
Malnutrition of children
Malnutrition is not a direct cause of death among children under five years of age; however, it can increase morbidity and mortality by reducing resistance to infections. Malnourished children are more vulnerable than normal children to any infection.
This was told to the Rajya Sabha by the Union Minister for Women and Child Development.
Renewable energy capacity in rural areas
The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing various schemes throughout India, including the rural areas, for the development and augmentation of renewable energy capacity.
