As told to Parliament (July 28, 2023): 33.8% children under 5 years of age are stunted; 57% women are anaemic

Some 33.8 per cent Indian children under five years of age are stunted and 57 per cent women (15-49 years) are anaemic according to the Fifth Round of National Family Health Survey or NFHS-5 (2019-21), Smriti Zubin Irani, Union minister of women and child development told the Lok Sabha on July 28, 2023.

Deaths of malnourished children

The overall under five mortality rate has reduced to 41.9 (NFHS-5) deaths per thousand live births from 49.7 (NFHS-4). No states have reported any direct deaths due to malnutrition. No such enquiry has been made by government through the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Irani told the Lok Sabha.

Life expectancy rate

The average life expectancy at birth has increased to 70.0 during 2016-20, from 49.7 during 1970-75. This is an increase of more than 20 years, Bharati Pravin Pawar, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare told the Lok Sabha.

Child mortality rate

As per the Cause of Death Statistics 2017-19 released by Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India; major causes of child mortality in India are — Prematurity & low birth weight (31.2 per cent), pneumonia (17.5 per cent), birth asphyxia & birth trauma (9.9 per cent), other noncommunicable diseases (9.6 per cent), diarrheal diseases (5.8 per cent), congenital anomalies (5.7 per cent), injuries (4.9 per cent), ill-defined or cause unknown (4.3 per cent), fever of unknown origin (4.1 per cent), acute bacterial sepsis and severe infections (3.8 per cent) and all other remaining causes (3.3 per cent), Pawar told the Lok Sabha.

Nurses to Patient Ratio

There are 3.61 million nursing personnel in India, resulting in a nurse to population ratio of 2.10 nurses per thousand population. There are 5,203 nursing institutions including 715 government institutions producing nearly 0.36 million nursing personnel annually, to meet the requirement of nursing personnel in the country, Pawar told the Lok Sabha.

Cases of M-pox

As on July 24, 2023, 27 confirmed cases of m-pox disease have been reported by Indian states and Union territories. This includes 12 cases from Kerala and 15 cases from Delhi, Satya Pal Singh Baghel, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare told the Lok Sabha.

Gender Equality under AB-PMJAY

Women account for approximately 49 per cent of Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) card recipients. Further, 141 Health Benefit Packages under the scheme are exclusively earmarked for women.

Correspondingly, utilisation of scheme services by women stands at approximately 48 per cent of total authorised hospital admissions, Baghel told the Lok Sabha.

Dengue Fever in Kerala

Kerala has reported an increase in number of dengue cases as compared to previous years’ figures till July 31. As on July 20, 2023, 5,479 dengue cases were reported in Kerala. But in 2022, there were 2,158 dengue cases in Kerala, Baghel told the Lok Sabha.

COVID-19 Vaccination drive for Children

As on July 24, 2023, a total of 103.4 million beneficiaries have received 1st dose and 86.3 million beneficiaries have received 2nd dose of Covid-19 vaccine in 12-18 years age group in the country, Baghel told the Lok Sabha.
