Panchayatiraj has improved delivery of essential public services. It has helped in transforming old model of public delivery essentials. In Kerala, delivery of services like sanitation, drinking water and education has improved a lot due to panchayats. It helped in poverty reduction.

Government of India now directly works with panchayats in key rural development programmes. We are now piloting National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) program in Maharastra, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand with help of Panchayats and Self-help Groups (SHGs). The ultimate gain from panchayatiraj is steady empowerment of women.

  • Yes, it is true to some

Yes, it is true to some extent in some parts of our country. The powers of the Panchayat have not been fully transfered and still dominated by the top down approach. Still lot of work has to be done in this direction.

The need of the hour is to empower the panchayat with powers and resources and allow them to initiated bottom up approaches which are more participative based on the needs, skills and vulnerabilities of the people and environment. All these will lead for community strategies / interventions which alone will improve the service delivery system with better sustainability and quality. and further to improve the health & wealth of People & Environment.
