T-Shirts>> Racism • Australia
Social media furore forced supermarket chain Aldi to withdraw its Australia Day T-shirt and singlet from stores. Aldi was criticised by a number of Twitter users for its T-shirts emblazoned with “AUSTRALIA EST 1788” logos.
The T-shirts and singlets were scheduled to go on sale in the lead-up to Australia Day on January 26. Twitter users slammed the design as racist and culturally insensitive to indigenous Australians, who inhabited the continent for thousands of years before Europeans arrived.
The online furore forced Aldi to apologise on Twitter for “any offence taken”.
