ministers and heads of national delegations from 155 countries wound up a six-day conference on science in Budapest with a call to increase resources for scientific research, bridge the gap between North-South science and technology (s&t) knowledge and harness s&t for the betterment of society.

The 'World Conference on Science: Science for the 21st Century, a new commitment' held from June 26 to July 1, produced two documents -- a declaration and a framework for action, on which to shape the course of science in the new millennium.

A debate on the 'Nature of Science' -- while focusing its the history -- urged a better understanding and synchronisation of Western and Oriental scientific traditions. The participants called for an increase in funding for science and proposed the creation of an international fund to promote research, co-operation and training for developing countries.

The conference brought together more than 1,800 participants , including 90 ministers from regional and international non-governmental organisations and un organisations.
