global warming, an increase in temperatures due to emissions of greenhouse gases, might lead to changes in green cover in the Western Ghats, according to Babu Lal Marandi, minister of state for environment and forests. There may be an adverse affect on the availability of forest products and employment level in the region after two to five decades, he said.
The Swedish International Development Agency sponsored the study that was conducted in two regions of the Western Ghats -- Uttara Kannada and the Nilgiri Hills. Researchers have used climate change projections for the year 2020 and 2050 to reach the conclusion. Researchers made it clear that the findings should be considered more as an indicator of the direction of change. These are based on regional projections of climate change, they added.
