Ceramic bearings can be used safely in industry now that German scien tists at the Fraunhofer Institute For Mechanics of Materials in Freiburg have developed a computer model to predict when they are close to cracking up. The researchers loaded bearings to their breaking point and compared the laboratory results with theoretical models. The result is a computer program that predicts the load that can be carried by a ceramic bearing of any size or shape. Unlike steel, ceramic materials can be immersed in corrosive liquids and require less lubrication.
