Coronavirus update: Recoveries greater than daily COVID-19 cases in Andhra

The number of recoveries from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Andhra Pradesh was consistently greater than the number of fresh cases added for the past two weeks, according to a September 18, 2020 report by news daily Indian Express.

• The state is the second-most affected after Maharashtra, with 601,462 cases as of September 18, according to private tracker covid19india.org. The state’s daily caseload went below the 10,000-mark since September 10.
• Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu encouraged the house’s members to pass slips between each other to communicate instead of going to each other’s seats or come to the Table House during the session as a part of safety measures against COVID-19, reported news agency Press Trust of India September 18.
• “If you have something to communicate send slips. It is not allowed in examination halls but is allowed here,” Naidu was quoted as saying by PTI.
• Schools in Meghalaya — shut for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic — will partially reopen next week for students to meet teachers and clarify doubts, the state’s education minister Lahkmen Rymbui was quoted as saying by news daily Times of India September 18.
• Students of classes 9-12 will be able to meet their teachers, but there will be no regular classes and classroom sessions, according to Times of India.
• Curbs against the COVID-19 were extended in Maharashtra capital Mumbai till September 30, as the city reported 2,389 new cases and 43 deaths on September 16, reported news portal Scroll.in.
• India added 96,793 fresh COVID-19 cases September 17, taking the total number of cases to 5,219,211, with 1,021,807 active cases, 4,112,233 recoveries and 84,434 deaths as of September 18, according to covid19india.org.
• New Zealand reported no new confirmed COVID-19 cases for the first time in more than five weeks, reported news agency Indo-Asian News Service, citing a statement by the country’s health ministry.
• People earlier linked a community cluster in Auckland city remained in a quarantine facility in the city, the report said.
• COVID-19 can cause a short-term decline in life expectancy in severely affected areas across the world unless the spread of the disease was contained, according to a September 18 Press Trust of India report citing research published in journal PLOS ONE.
• “Our study provides the first assessment of the potential impact of COVID-19 on period life expectancies according to a range of scenarios of prevalence rates over a one-year period,” said Guillaume Marois, from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, who led the study.
• A test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, designed in the United Kingdom and known as DnaNudge, gives results in just over an hour and needs no laboratory, reported news agency Reuters September 18, citing an academic review in journal Lancet.
• The test — accurate in almost all cases — was based on the design developed by a professor at Imperial College, London received approval for clinical use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency at the end of April after successful trials.
• China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd planned to start a clinical trial of its experimental vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 with children and adolescents later this month, reported news daily Hindustan Times.
• The total number of COVID-19 cases across the world was 30,378,934, with 951,133 deaths and 22,061,673 recoveries as of September 18 evening, according to data from tracker worldometers.info.
