NGT asks MoEF&CC to provide data on post Environment Clearance monitoring

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on January 10 asked the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) to provide information on the number of cases where post Environmental Clearance monitoring has been effectively done and the results thereof. NGT said that such data is necessary for any further direction which may be necessary for environment protection.

Submit report on illegal sand mining on the banks of river Subarnarekha at the earliest: NGT

The National Green Tribunal on January 10 directed the Jharkhand Pollution Control Board to coordinate the functioning of the Chairman of the Oversight Committee and assist in coordinating with the states of Odisha and the West Bengal and also provide such facilities, as may be necessary, for functioning of the Chairman of the Oversight Committee at Ranchi itself. NGT was looking into the matter of illegal sand mining on the banks of the river Subarnarekha on the border of West Bengal and Odisha.

SC stays NGT order on stone crushers in Himachal Pradesh

In an order, the National Green Tribunal had quashed a state government notification granting consent to operate to any stone crusher in the state of Himachal Pradesh within 100 metres of a water body. While going through the matter on January 7, the Supreme Court (SC) ordered the state government as well as the stone crushing units to move the NGT by way of review or for a suitable modification of the order and further ordered for the deferment of the enforcement of the directions which have been issued by the NGT by a period of three months so as to enable all the parties to move the Tribunal in appropriate proceedings.

Trees felled illegally in Kurnool for laying of optic fibre line, NGT told

A report submitted by the Divisional Forest Officer had stated that about 125 avenue trees of species such as Kanuga, Seematangedu, Peltofurum and Neem were felled without any permission for laying underground optic fibre line from Nannoor to Veldurthy village by Reliance-JIO. The National Green Tribunal on January 9 directed the Chief Conservator of Forests, Andhra Pradesh to take appropriate action to oversee the steps required to be taken in the matter, particularly recovery of compensation as per the Net Present Value principle.

A time-bound action plan on water body encroachments in Chennai must: NGT

The National Green Tribunal on January 7 was informed that due to rapid urbanisation in Chennai, its water bodies have become a prime target for encroachments. During floods, the encroached areas become more vulnerable and susceptible to inundation. Further to this, NGT directed the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to submit a time-bound action plan regarding the manner under which encroachers are evicted, for taking necessary action against polluters polluting the water bodies and time required for rehabilitating encroachers. The action plan has to be submitted within a period of one month.

Legacy waste to be disposed as per norms: NGT tells Kollam Corporation

The National Green Tribunal on January 7 directed the Kollam Corporation to submit a detailed affidavit showing the manner in which legacy (a type of radioactive) waste is to be disposed and the time required for disposal of the same.
