XBB1.16.1 strain isolated in 234 COVID-19 patients: INSACOG
Photo: iStock India recorded 7,830 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 fatalities as of 8 am April 12, 2023, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This is the highest number of fresh cases in 223 days.
The number of active cases in the country rose to 40,215. The 214,242 samples were analysed in the last 24 hours, the health ministry shared.
The state of Kerala has the most active cases with 14,506, followed by Maharashtra (4,875), Delhi (2,876), Tamil Nadu (2,301), and Haryana (2,149), which has replaced Gujarat (1,932) since yesterday.
Kerala reported 761 new cases on April 11.
The Government of Odisha, where the daily addition of cases remained above 100 the last four days, wrote to the health ministry requesting 50,000 additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines to immunise those who haven’t got the booster jab yet.
The ministry reported that around 441 doses of the COVID-19 vaccination were given in total during the previous 24 hours. The nation currently has a recovery rate of 98.72 per cent.
As many as 22 states and Union territories have reported 1,774 occurrences of the XBB1.16 strain, according to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
XBB1.16.1, the mutated sub-variant of Omicron, has been contracted by over 230 of the infected patients, INSACOG shared.
COVID-19 mock drills were held throughout 35 states / Union territories and 724 districts on April 10 and 11, 2023, in an effort to increase preparation across the nation in hospitals and healthcare systems.
The mock exercises were conducted in a total of 33,685 healthcare facilities, comprising 5,635 private and 28,050 public facilities.
