An action-taken report was submitted by the Department of Urban Development, Uttar Pradesh, on the non-compliance of municipal solid waste management rules in Vrindavan, Mathura. This was in response to December 18, 2019 National Green Tribunal (NGT) order.

According to the report, the municipal corporation had authorised an agency for door-to-door collection and transportation of waste. At the processing and landfill site at Nagla Kolhu, Mathura, processing plant was established and all due NOCs granted. The work of treatment of legacy waste at Mant Road was started and would be completed by May 2020, the tribunal was informed.

North Delhi garbage dumping

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation filed an affidavit-cum-report on the action taken dumping of garbage on roads. This was in response to the NGT order of July 19, 2019.

North DMC comprises six zones — Civil Lines, City SP, Karol Bagh, Keshav Puram, Narela and Rohini. All six zones have a mechanism in place for supervision of solid waste management.

The report mentioned the present and future plans for solid waste management, which included door-to-door collection and segregation of solid waste by waste pickers. Further, after the primary collection of solid waste, it is transferred to i) fixed compactor transfer stations (FCTS) and ii) mobile compactors.

The secondary transport of solid waste through the FCTSs / mobile compactors involves disposing solid waste at waste-to-energy plant, compost plant or sanitary landfill site.

South Delhi waste disposal

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation filed an affidavit-cum-report on the action taken in respect of unscientific dumping of garbage on roads. This was in compliance of the NGT order of July 19, 2019.

According to the report, SDMC is establishing a system through concessionaires to recognise organisations of waste pickers and establish a system for integration of waste pickers. This will facilitate their participation in solid waste management, including segregation and door-to-door collection of waste, according to the report.

To prevent littering on roads, green and blue dustbins have been provided at various locations, especially near bus stands, markets, along roads and other places frequented by people. The work of integrated collection and transportation of municipal solid waste, street sweeping and drain silting in Najafgarh zone has been awarded to a concessionaire, the report said.
