Lands in Haryana coming under PLPA is forest land

The lands covered by the special orders issued under Section 4 of the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900 (PLPA ) have all the trappings of forest lands within the meaning of Forest (conservation) Act, 1980, the Supreme Court noted.

Therefore, the state government or any other competent authority cannot permit its use for non-forest activities without the prior approval of the central government, said the court.

Prior permission from the central government is required to allow any changes in the use of such forest land. Concerned authorities shall take action to remove the remaining illegal structures on the land covered by the special orders, directed the court.

Solid waste management in Tamil Nadu

Ninety-six per cent of solid wastes in Tamil Nadu are collected door-to-door, stated a report filed by the state government of Tamil Nadu before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Hundred per cent of total waste is being collected, claimed the report on the implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules.

Some 9,310 tonnes per day (TPD) out of 14,995 TPD of total waste generated in 2022 was processed, said the report. The estimated quantity of legacy waste is 20.7 million cubic metres and biomining works were taken up in 269 locations, read the report

Shortfalls in liquid waste management in Ghaziabad

Bio-remediation techniques adopted by Nagar Nigam, Ghaziabad in 10 monitored drains were not effective, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) stated in its report to the NGT.

High organic load was observed at the outfall of each drain and Nagar Nigam, Ghaziabad needs to address the issue by ensuring complete (100 per cent) tapping of drains, the report said The CPCB report was in response to the NGT order dated, October 22, 2021.
