Panel for paddy transplant
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on July 4, 2019 directed that a four-member committee be formed to investigate changing the date of paddy crop transplantation in Punjab to June 13 from June 20. Applicant Jai Gopal Dhiman said it would further deplete ground water level while the Department of Water Resources and Central Ground Water Authority reported that 79 per cent of the state’s area was already over-exploited for ground water.
Investigate Kondli STP
The NGT asked the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and Delhi Jal Board to investigate, take appropriate action and report on the alleged improper operation of the sewage treatment plant (STP) in Kondli and the resultant bad odour. The allegations include no clearing of sludge, causing air pollution and violation of operational norms.
Kochi kiln pollution
The NGT asked the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on July 4, 2019 to look into brick kilns operating in Sree Moolanagaran Parchayat, Kochi, Kerala that allegedly pollutes the air and endanger public health. The KSPCB has to submit a factual and action-taken report on the matter within a month.
Do hydel plants measure water?
The NGT directed Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board on July 4, 2019 to investigate if hydroelectric power stations in the state are measuring the flow of water released downstream during the lean season and submit a report. They allegedly did not and that led the pollution levels to go up and caused harm to aquatic life due to water scarcity. Around 15-20 per cent of average lean season flow is required to be maintained.
