Illegal constructions on Goa’s beaches

The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has passed various orders regarding environmental violations in the turtle nesting sites at Agonda, Galgibag, Mandrem and Morjim.

The report came in response to a matter related to temporary structures constructed over no-development zones on these beaches without obtaining specific permission from GCZMA.

The authority imposed environmental compensation on 42 violators from south Goa for causing environmental damages by violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. The compensation was calculated by a committee constituted by GCZMA.

The GCZMA report was in compliance with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order dated May 12, 2023. The tribunal had directed GCZMA to expedite the entire process of assessing the compensation to be levied from 148 violators. Moreover, it ordered GCZMA to issue necessary directions and submit a report within one month.

Waste dumping on banks of Upper Ganga Canal

Solid waste dumped on the banks of the Upper Upper Ganga Canal in Fatehpur Bujurg village in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh has been cleared, stated a report filed by the Uttar Pradesh government before the NGT.

A new site has been selected for the proper disposal of dry solid waste generated from the village households, noted the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). The report was in compliance with the NGT order dated April 12, 2023.

The Gram Panchayat, Fatehpur Bujurg, has also served notices to 24 households saying that garbage disposal at the canal bank is banned and violators will be charged with a penalty of Rs 5,000, followed by prosecution.

The Gram Panchayat has planted saplings of plants at the banks to prevent future dumping.

A joint committee comprising officers from District Panchayati Raj, Ganga Canal and Nagar Palika Parishad has been constituted by the district magistrate for the inspection of the site and to take appropriate actions.
