The National Green Tribunal (NGT) November 21, 2023 directed notice to be issued to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd and state of Assam regarding allegations of cutting down about 2,000 trees for road expansion between Guwahati and Goalpara in Assam.
The Principal Bench of NGT transferred the matter to the Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata. The case will be next heard on January 10, 2024.
The Original Application was registered suo motu on the basis of the news item titled Assam: Adil Hussain joins chorus urging Govt, NHAI to spare century-old trees for highway project which appeared in the news portal Northeast Now on October 27, 2023.
All steps are being taken by the state of Punjab to bridge the gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment. Punjab filed its second progress / status report (May-September 2023) in compliance with the NGT order dated September 22, 2022.
In compliance with the NGT order, Punjab constituted a committee under the Chairmanship of Administrative Secretary, department of local government vide office order November 11, 2022 for regular review of the progress for bridging the gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment.
Around 99 per cent compliance was achieved in door-to-door waste collection and transportation in a segregated manner, 87 per cent in segregation of waste at source, 79 per cent in processing of solid waste.
Around 2.54 million tonnes of legacy waste has been remediated and there is a balance of 3.68 million tonnes.
Legacy waste remediation has been completed in 79 urban local bodies (ULB) and remediation is under progress in the remaining 69 ULBs. In addition to processing of composting of wet waste, 17 CNG / biomethanation plants for processing of wet waste have been planned to be set up.
The ULBs have tied up with plastic waste processors for disposal of plastic waste, particularly multi-layered plastics. Around 77 ULBs tied up with waste processors and 335 tonnes of waste have been channelised for processing to waste processors.
Construction and demolition waste management plants have been set up and are functional at Amritsar and Jalandhar and under construction at Ludhiana.
There are a total 133 stone crushing units in Mahendragarh district, Haryana, stated a report filed by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board November 21, 2023.
A total amount of Rs 1.4 crore has been deposited by seven stone crusher units (Rs 20 lakh each) as interim environmental compensation.
All the stone crushing units of Mahendragarh are presently lying closed in compliance with air pollution control measures, according to the report.
