Cold wave over north, northwest Delhi to stay for next two days

Photo: Nandita Banerji / CSE Parts of north India reported severe cold and dense fog January 5, 2022, with the national capital Delhi recording the season’s lowest at 3 degrees Celsius. Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are likely to see cold wave conditions for the next two days.
Coldwave conditions and dense fog over north and northwest India are likely to reduce its intensity after 48 hours, said India Meteorological Department (IMD). Safdarjung, the base station for Delhi, recorded 3 degrees C, but Ridge and Aya Nagar stations went as low as 2.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperatures in many parts of the plains of northwest India and isolated pockets over adjoining areas of north Madhya Pradesh are in the range of 1-5°C. The lowest minimum temperature of -1.5°C was observed in Churu and Sikar in Rajasthan.
Severe cold wave conditions were observed in a few places over Rajasthan. Some pockets over Punjab and Haryana and in isolated pockets over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh saw cold wave conditions as well.
Dense to very dense fog was reported in several areas of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh also reported dense fog in a few areas.

Isolated areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Jammu, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh also reported dense fog on the morning of January 5.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over East India in the next two days, which is expected to fall by 2-4°C thereafter. No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over remaining parts of the country during the next five days.
Isolated rainfall and snowfall are also likely over the Western Himalayan Region over the weekend, January 7 to January 9, 2023, due to a fresh western disturbance over east Iran.
Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra might also see isolated light rainfall in the next 24 hours due to a trough in southeast Madhya Pradesh to north Madhya Maharashtra in lower tropospheric levels.
Visibility levels were also low in India due to the dense fog. The visibility levels were 50 metres around 5:30 am, reported news agency Press Trust of India. At least 12 trains were delayed by one-and-a-half to six hours and two were rescheduled due to the foggy weather, a Railways spokesperson said.
Most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh reported cold day to severe cold day conditions January 4, 2023. Isolated parts of Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar had also reported cold day conditions.
