Panchayat Elections Mangalore
In a brand new application of Global Information Systems (gis), the district police of Dakshina Kannada are using gis to monitor panchayat elections. The superintendent of police can observe the arrangements at any particular booth on his laptop computer, while being at another corner of the district at any point of time.

Using software called 'Arc View', the police have stitched a digital map of the district with the police security scheme. All polling plan details such as sensitivity of the booths, stationing of police forces and deployment of personnel to booths have been integrated with the map. In case of any disturbance, police can be deployed to the site in minutes. The software will provide the police with a better perspective at the field-level. For the time being, the gis application is only being used experimentally at the district. The application also gives information about the contestants and the number and gender break-up of the voters in a particular booth.
