Bengaluru lake pollution
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on December 18, 2019 refused to extend the timelines for execution of projects to set up STPs and lay sewerage network to contain the pollution of Bellandur, Agara and Varthur lakes in Bengaluru. It warned that if the work remained incomplete even after September 30, 2020, compensation would be recovered from erring officers at the rate of Rs 10 lakh per STP per month.
Remedial measures to contain Ganga pollution
The NGT on December 18 directed timely completion of all projects relating to treatment of sewage flowing into the Ganga by July 31, 2020, and December 31, 2020 for others failing which, compensation will have to be paid. Till then, to avoid untreated sewage being discharged directly into the Ganga, interim remedial measures will need to be adopted.
Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary
The NGT on December 13 directed the Joint Secretary of Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change to remain present in person along with a report on encroachment of areas around Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary.
A complaint was filed against Hindustan Institute of Technology & Management and Anand Engineering College in Agra, that their buildings fall within the sanctuary area.
Green belt in Mayapuri
The NGT on December 13 directed the formation of a Joint Committee comprising of Deputy Conservator of Forest (West), Sub Divisional Magistrate (West) and a nominee of Delhi Development Authority to demarcate the forest area in Mayapuri and submit a report.
