Europeans and Biotechnology in 2002 - Eurobarometer 58.0 (2nd Edition: March 21st 2003) By George Gaskell, Nick Allum and Sally Stares

The Eurobarometer Survey measures the awareness and concerns of Europeans on important environmental issues. The fifth edition of the survey, conducted last year, focused on a few key questions, including what people think are the chief causes of pollution, their confidence level about setting environmental problems right and the most appropriate level for taking decisions on the environment.

On the reasons for environmental degradation, 50 per cent worried about nuclear incidents while 45 per cent cited industrial disasters. Traditional environmental issues, such as air and water pollution, preoccupied 41-44 per cent of the respondents. Greece was found to be most concerned member state, and the Netherlands the least concerned. The survey also reported that more Europeans consider the eu to be better placed than national governments, to take decisions on the environment.
