A division bench of the Calcutta high court recently directed the Union government to file an affidavit stating the steps it has taken to avoid erosion and recurrence of floods in Malda. The bench, comprising Chief Justice S B Sinha and Justice MHS Ansari, however, rejected the Centre's report on erosion and floods caused by the Ganga in the district. The court, instead, directed the Centre to hold secretary-level meetings to prepare a scheme for a permanent solution to the problem. Earlier, a petition filed by advocate Debashish Gupta alleged that no steps had been taken to control floods in the region.
