the Jammu and Kashmir government has formulated a Rs 1.36-crore project for the Hemis National Park, situated 40 km south-east of Leh. The national park derives its name from Hemis Gorpa -- a holy place for the Buddhists. This sanctuary is situated in one of the coldest regions of the country and the proposed project plans to provide a better habitat for its rare mammalian species. On the right flank flows the Indus river.
The park is home to the blue sheep, called the bharral in the local language . Catchment areas of rivers Markha, Rumbak, Chang-Chue Alam and Shan-Shadi fall within the park boundaries. The area is watered by the Zanskar river from Lamaguru which merges with the Indus via the chilling Sandroo. The park is home to 30 species of birds that include migratory birds as well. Among the popular birds are the tuffed duck and merganser.
