GARBAGE CHECK

Published: Wednesday 15 September 1999

Residents and non-governmental organisations ( ngo s) in Karachi's south district are complaining of piling garbage. They say that the collection system is unsatisfactory and this can lead to an epidemic. In many localities, particularly in the old city, such as Lyari, Mehmoodabad and some other poor settlements, roads and streets remain littered with garbage, claim residents. The south district in Karachi generates around 1,600 tonnes of garbage daily and the District Municipal Corporation-South ( dmc -S) lifts about 1,000 tonnes per day. According to a dmc source, the backlog will either be removed on holidays or through special evening and night campaigns.
