A census survey in a Himachal Pradesh wildlife sanctuary has spotted the extremely rare Himalayan brown bear and white-bellied musk deer, according to a media report.
The animals were spotted in the Sechun Tuan Nalla Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located in Chamba district’s Pangi. The 390-sq km sanctuary remains cut off for eight months in a year.
The musk deer has been hunted for its musk pod, a sac containing musk found in the male of the species, which is used in making perfumes, incense and medicines.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List the musk deer is listed as ‘Endangered’.
52 mugger crocodiles rescued in Gujarat’s Vadodara
Officials from the forest department along with wildlife activists have rescued 52 mugger crocodiles in Vadodara city and district in Gujarat since the beginning of August, according to a media report.
The state had received torrential rain in the earlier part of the month, which had led to flooding in various districts including Vadodara.
As the water is receding now, the crocodiles which had emerged in various areas of the district and city have now started going back to their water bodies.
The forest department, along with non-profit Wildlife SOS and the Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also been rerscuing and releasing the animals in the water bodies, including the Vishwamitri river.
