The Sunsari-Morang irrigation project in Nepal has been mired in a corruption controversy. It is alleged that money granted for setting up the infrastructure of the project has been embezzled.
Parliamentarian Lal Babu Pandit, representing constituency 3 of Morang district, has levelled these charges after seeing the poor quality of roads laid for the project by consumer's committee. A contractor reveals, "We were given Rs 20,000 for the construction of three kilometres of road at Babiyabirta village. However, the committee has put the construction cost at Rs 50,000."
