A new device to detect the oil spills has been developed. The Laser Environmental Airborne Flurosensor ( leaf) system has the ability to detect the various sources of oil spills in water. The project a joint venture of the Emergencies Science Division (EMD) and the US Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Services (MMS) The oil spills produce patches of oil of varying thickness which makes the device a sensitive emergency device. The technology can be used to map out oil contamination locations. The LEAF has an edge over the other technologies as it can differentiate between the natural oil spill from the human sources.
