'Quotes from the Earth' is an independent festival of films on the environment. A unique event in that it is the first time that such a festival is being held 'independently', the festival also marks the India International Centre's (iic's) 42nd Annual Day celebrations.
Through films which have engaged with critical environmental issues in India, it seeks to enhance an understanding of the complex environmental and developmental framework as it is emerging in India, to create a more informed and discursive space for it. The festival will present documentary films in their diversity and give a historical perspective on the Indian environmental debate through a screening of some older films.
The festival has been divided into three main issues of 'Water', 'Hunger' and 'Survival'. Screenings apart, there will be panel discussions each evening on the day's theme with eminent academicians, grass root activists and film-makers.
The festival will also include a media space on the environment which will be set up in the Art Gallery, iic Annexe and include for the first time in India, a major sound installation, as well as video footages.
The sound installation is an abstraction from the films screened at the festival: voices in Hindi, Gujarati, English, Bengali, Bihari, Maharati, Malyali and Tamil, or that of women and men, old, young, happy, angry or upset, devoted and dramatic: the voices of those who know of survival at first-hand. This exhibition will be curated by Pradip Saha, photographer and managing editor of Down to Earth magazine.
