Nearly 2,500 ha of forests have been devastated following fires in Lampung in the last two months. Last year, fires destroyed nearly 1,439 ha of forest's area, which accounted for about 13.92 per cent of the forests destroyed throughout the country.
During 1994, nearly 7,401 ha of Lampung's 1.2 million ha of forests were destroyed. According to Poedjono Pranyoto, the Governor of Lampung, around 237 areas are vulnerable to fire during the current year's drought. Out of the total forests in the country, nearly 20 per cent are preserved forests and timber estates, whereas the rest are bushes.
