Tribal initiative to save forest
Following the urging of at least 200 Mog tribal families of south Tripura to save the Takka Tulshi reserve forest from smugglers, the state forest officials organised a forest fair, recently.
"The fair aimed educating people about the need to protect forest and green land. We also tried to teach how forest can provide them a sustainable income, said the organisers.
The three-day forest fair was jointly organised by Bagafa forest division and the local panchayat and was inaugurated by Tripura environment minister Badal Choudhury. Spread over 10 sq km, the reserve forest is situated along Bangladesh border and is an easy target for timber and bamboo smugglers. The forest is the only source of livelihood for these Mog tribal families, who venerate the forests and worship trees as a custom.
