Bridging the gap

I think it is a very good idea to bring out a fortnightly newsmagazine dealing with science, technology, environment and development. It should go a long way towards creating public opinion in favour of environmental protection.

P N BHAGWATI, Former Chief Justice, New Delhi

A newsmagazine of this kind will be an important contribution to the development process in India and elsewhere. All the best in this exciting endeavour.

NAZEER AZIZ LADHANI , Chief executive officer, Aga Khan Foundation, Ontario

Your project could provide valuable educational material, especially for educationists and activists. I wish your enterprise all success.

A view from the South

Down To Earth will be a welcome contribution to the existing pool of information on issues of science, environment and development, especially from a Southern perspective. D A BEKOE , Regional director, International Development Research , Centre, Nairobi

I am delighted to learn that you are planning to launch Down To Earth. I feel that science, technology and development are very closely connected and we cannot improve the quality of our rural life unless we take technology to them and integrate these systems with their way of life. And, of course, the impact this process has on the environment is of primary concern. It is, therefore, an excellent idea that you are, lauinching a magazine which will integrate these topics.

HARI NARAIN, National Geophysical Research , Institute, Hyderabad

I am extremely happy that such a proposal has been conceived by you and your colleagues to serve the cause of sustainable development, especially in developi ng countries.

K K RAMACHANDRAN, Head of environmental sciences division, Centre for Earth Science Studies , Thiruvananthapuram

Your initiative will be welcomed by everyone who has concern for environmental issues. I need hardly give advice to an activist about how to reach out to people! I wish the magazine all success.

MANU SHROFF , Former editor, The Economic Times, Bombay

I am quite sure that this will be excellent reading for people like us who are keenly interested in issues related to development and its impact on the environment.

B C JAIN , President , Ankur - Energy And Development, Alternative, Baroda ...

Getting down to earth

I have taken the liberty of being frank because of the regard I have for you and 'I feel that whatever work you undertake should enable you to give your best to society.

Some 40 years ago, I had the privilege of publishing and partly editing Vigil, a weekly founded by the late Acharya JB Kripalani. It enjoyed a good reputation and circulation. It had to close down subsequently,,Therefore, I am aware of the heartbreaks which can occur when one 2nde'rtakes a regular publication. I am sounding this note ol caulftonlest your enthusiasm, which I can understand, makes you ovorlank gbmg irAP60W ipecls of publfcation.

It is compaTatively easy for estabpromote another journal. They can absorb the initial losses. They can also attract sufficient advertisements within a reasonable period. Today, when there is a plethora of jourrials, a new entrant without the support of a newspaper will have to face additional difficulties. I hope you have taken these aspects into consideration. Your proposed magazine appears to be quite comprehensive and useful to those who look for a better and happier society. You have rightly considered various aspects of the environment and the need for a holistic understanding of the complex issues involved in development and the environment.
