COMPUTERS:Computer-chip manufacturing technology is about to undergo a revolutionary change. The 4 US-based bigwigs - IBM, AT&T, Motorola and Loral - have put their heads together to develop semiconductors through X-rays instead of ultraviolet tight. These, they claim, would be vastly more powerful than those in use today. "We see it as a way to reduce expenses and share risk," says Michael J Attardo, general manager of IBM's microelectronics division. The alliance would involve an investment of about 5100 million in cash and technology. The coalition will jointly refine the technology, but the "super chip" will be marketed by the companies individually.
ENVIRONMENTAL: Companies in the UK can now find out about European and British environmental legislation merely by flipping the pages of a directory. Wearside Training and Enterprise Council of the UK has designed this unique package, which explains the intricacies of the regulations on air, water, waste, dangerous substance and noise legislation. Priced at 399, the directory is available on an environment-friendly disk, which can be accessed using Windows software.
CNG: Daweoo Motor Co of South Korea has developed a high performance, low pollutants emission, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle. Called the Daweoo NGV II, the car is the latest in the range of "green vehicles" that have hit the market in recent times. It has a multipoint gas injector for greater fuel efficiency and can run for 400 km on 100 litres of CNG, with its 1,598 cubic cm engine. In comparison to gasoline engines, the new system reduces total emissions by more than 50 per cent.
