More stringent laws

the US government will be legislating more stringent laws for genetically modified (gm) and biotech foods. gm food makers will be required to submit information about their products to the Food and Drug Administration ( fda ), the us food regulation agency, before marketing them. fda is planning to develop guidelines for voluntary labelling of biotech foods.

Under the new laws, fda would review new gm food products. After inspecting them it would write a letter to the manufacturers describing its conclusion about the safety and regulatory status of the products. These steps have been taken in an attempt to build consumer confidence. According to two consumer group leaders, fda 's approach is inadequate to assure consumers that gm foods are safe.
