Mundo Villa in Buenos Aires was once known as a hotbed for crime.
The shanty town is grabbing headlines in Argentine newspapers since August first week for starting its own TV station, Mundo Villaevision, an initiative of Mundo Villa’s 1,500 residents.
“Twenty-five students from the neighborhood gather news,” the station’s director Victor Ramos said.
The channel is financed by his organisation, SOS Discrimination.
The channel’s first few transmissions were about problems people in the neighborhood face, like no electricity and drinking water. “Officials saw the programme and now a water distribution system is being built in a part of the slum,” Ramos said.
