Working democracy
The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) operates this site under review. Established in 1997, this network of civil society organisations aims to promote democratisation at national and grassroots levels in Asia. The organisation has been active in capacity building of member and non-member organisations on issues related to election observation, voter/civic education, electoral reform and public awareness for good democratic governance.
It has organised trainings and comparative study seminars of election laws in Asia. In November 1998 for instance, a seminar-workshop on election laws was held in Indonesia, in which election experts from selected Asian countries participated. The critique and the recommendations of the seminar and workshop were submitted to the Indonesian authorities for consideration in finalising their election laws.
But it's not just electoral democracy that ANFREL is concerned about. The organisation also spends a good part of its energy in guiding people and governments through documentaries. The site under review, for instance, has links to sites that deal with management and distribution of agricultural resources, natural disaster mitigation and scientific research.
There is, however, a preponderance of government-run sites -- if one goes by the links that pertain to India. One hopes other sectors will be represented soon.
