Industrial effluents being dumped into Hindon river: UP pollution board tells NGT
An action report Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) was taken up for consideration on April 26. The tribunal acknowledged that industrial effluents and sewage are being discharged into the drain discharged into Hindon River. The UPPCB report was submitted in response to the complaint of pollution caused by cloth dyeing and printing industry at MG Road, Industrial Area Block, Dhaulana, Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh.
The board’s counsel said this problem was faced by most of the industrial areas in UP and when the industrial areas were set up, requisite infrastructure for scientific discharge of effluents was not developed.
'Conduct environment audit on Udhampur-Banihal highway'
The NGT on April 26 disposed of review applications filed by Gammon India Ltd and Hindustan Construction Co Ltd on the order directing them to pay an interim compensation of Rs 1 crore each. This was to penalise them for causing pollution while expanding Udhampur-Banihal national highway in Jammu & Kashmir to four lanes.
Further, the NGT ordered that an environment audit be conducted by a committee it constituted. The committee was asked to assess the damage right from the beginning of the project and submit a report within two months.
More needs to be done on Khanua Nala restoration: NGT
A two-member bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and K Ramakrishnan of the NGT on April 26 said more needs to be done for restoration of Khanua Nala at Chapra, district Saran, Bihar. This observation came in wake of an interim report filed by state urban development secretary indicating steps taken for removal of encroachment, renovation of drain and cleaning.
The NGT asked that a report be submitted within three months on actions taken in a time-bound manner.
Eco-restoration of rivers
The NGT on April 26 heard an application for restoration of rivers to save forests from floods. The applicant Gopal Chandra Sinha said working plan for scientific management of forests requires reduction of siltation of water and reservoirs. This requires collection of boulders/silt from river beds in forests. The NGT directed state’s principal secretary (forests) to submit an action report within three months.
